Ten things to do for Chinese New Year

  1. Chinese New Year Parade, London:  Sunday 22 Jan. Usually starting from 10am in Charing Cross Road, the costume parade makes its way up Shaftesbury Avenue and into Chinatown. There are stage shows in Trafalgar Square, workshops and special set-dinner menus galore.
  2. Dragon Parade, Manchester: Sunday 22 Jan.  A 53 metre dragon makes its way from Manchester Central to Chinatown, accompanied by dancers and performers. Catch the parade from 12pm.
  3. Glasgow New Year Celebrations: Sun 29th Jan. The celebrations start from 12pm with a Lion Dance in George Square followed by an art show in the city chambers from 1pm.
  4. Birmingham Lunar New Year: Head to Chinatown across the whole weekend of 21/22 for dancing, performances and a firework finale
  5. Edinburgh New Year Festival: a full programme of events between 20 Jan and 3 Feb including concerts, Edinburgh Castle light show, Ceilidhs and a performance of Mulan.
  6. Liverpool New Year Celebrations: sunday 22 Jan from 10am. Catch the family fun, food and trinket stalls at Festival Gardens
  7. Sheffield Lunar New Year: a ticketed charity performance in aid of the Children’s Hospital will take place at 7pm on 24th Jan. 
  8. Nottingham: Lakeside Arts are hosting a range of family workshops between 11th Jan and 5th Feb, including lantern making, fan painting and Chinese tea making.
  9. Cardiff: The Red Dragon Centre is hosting a Chinese activity afternoon on Sun 22 Jan including lantern making, calligraphy and a chopstick competition
  10. Shanghai, China: For the real deal, the best place to visit is really Ditan Park, where there’s daily performances, historical re-enactments and food stalls. You can also visit the Temple Night Markets throughout the whole month.
